It's another important question because disabled students have protections against being expelled when they act out. One concept you might want to look into, and which I feel fits my child's father better than an AS or other autism spectrum diagnosis (though I still debate myself about this, and of course he is not interested in seeing a psych professional), is Schizoid Personality Disorder (DSM IV definition) or ''the schizoid position,'' in psychoanalytic terminology. (Note that there is much overlap between these ideas, but they are not identical.) However, diagnostic constructs are fluid, and having participated in an online community of schizoid individuals and their partners for over a year now, I'll tell you that anecdotally, there appears to be A LOT of crossover between varying AS/high-functioning autism diagnoses and schizoid personality.

After trying and trying without much success, there is a risk the child (and adult) may find it safer and less troublesome to be alone. Learning these skills helps kids achieve maximum independence. Therapies and behavioral interventions are designed to remedy specific symptoms and can substantially improve those symptoms. In this sample, 43 children (86%) met full ADI-R criteria for autistic disorder [which is stricter than the broader “autism spectrum disorder” of the current DSM-V (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition) criteria, or other autism spectrum disorders including PDD-NOS (pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified) or Asperger syndrome of DSM-IV criteria], defined by meeting cutoff scores in all three domains (social interaction, communication and language, restricted and repetitive behaviors) and having onset by 3 years of age.

BL I wonder if you have considered a social group for your daughter. According to Erika Drezner of the Asperger/Autism Network, “We’re not going anywhere; we’re still here, and still helping people. The study doesn't include information on autism in adults. A child with Asperger's syndrome may show signs of the disorder within their first year of life. Joint attention seems to be necessary for functional speech, and deficits in joint attention seem to distinguish infants with Autism Spectrum Disorder: for example, they may look at a pointing hand instead of the pointed-at object, and they consistently fail to point at objects in order to comment on or share an experience.
