Since Lyon & Healy is a pedal harp maker, they have long designed most models of lever harp they produce to have the same spacing, tension, and feel as their pedal harps. I only wish I had been sensible enough to buy one years ago. Since prehistory people have made bowl harps using tortoise shells and calabashes as resonators, with a bent stick for a neck and one or more gut or silk strings. Bowed instruments pose a challenge to instrument builders, as compared with instruments that are only plucked (e.g, guitar ), because on bowed instruments, the musician needs to be able to stroke only one string at a time if she wishes.

Two metal tubes at either end support a top tube, which has 6 holes drilled through its underside to expose the photosensors. At some point, some prehistoric genius put a second string on the bow, to have more than a single monotonous drone, and so became the first luthier. (A luthier is a maker of any stringed instrument, and not just lutes.) Following the dictum that more is better (a philosophy not entirely unknown in our own time), more and more strings were added, and eventually it was found that by enlarging and hollowing out one end of the bow to fashion a sound-box, a greater volume and better tone would result.

These hieroglyphs show that there were many harps in ancient Egypt. On display in the National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh. 29 strings, longest 61cm, one extra bass string added later. Their harps and CD's can be ordered directly online. Beautiful hand carvings on pillar, neck and soundbox, and with white inlaid purflings on neck and soundbox, and with inlaid (hand made) wooden purflings on the border of the soundboard.
